Education in UK loses Glamour for Indians Post Brexit

The Impact of Brexit and tough immigration laws has made Education in UK lose its charm among Indian Students. United Kingdom is slowly losing its reputation of being one of the most preferred education destinations for higher education by Indian students.

Various universities across UK have reported a decline in the number of applications from Indian students. Figures show a massive 35% decline in applications by Indians last year and the numbers have gone down from 55,000 students 2-3 years ago to 10,000 students at the present.

The reason for this downfall is being pinned down to two major factors. Firstly, the exit of United Kingdom from the European Union and secondly the tighter immigration laws of UK which is aimed at reducing the net immigration from over two lakhs to under one lakh people.

According to a co-founder of a New Delhi based consultancy that facilitates international admissions, the drop in number is due to the recent decisions taken by the UK government. The students belonging to the middle-income sector are dropping out due to limited means and stricter visa policies. Students cannot stay in UK after the completion of their course to pay off their education loans because of the newly amended stringent laws. The number of students sent by the consultancy every year had dropped from 4,000 students two years ago to 1,700 this time.

On the other hand, some of the top universities in the UK like the Imperial College London and King's College London claim that there has been no decline in the number of Indian Students at their university and they even expect an increase in the number this year.

With the fall in the number of students applying for higher education in the UK, there has been an increase in the number of application by Indian Students to the other parts of Europe and France. Soon enough we will have new hubs for higher education abroad.
