DU’s Lakshmibai College Goes Cashless with Smart Identity Cards

Delhi University’s Lakshmibai College recently introduced smart Identity Cards for its students. These cards contain RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips inbuilt in them, enabling them to be used as plastic money within the college premises. Plastic money in an identity card, this is an exceptionally revolutionary thought considering the current cash crunch in various ATMs and banks across the country. Now students can swipe these identity cards to pay for their canteen bills, photocopies, library fines and even college fees.

This indeed has brought an unconventional change to the lives of the students who unnecessarily have to wait in queues for hours only to withdraw a limited amount. Now the students will have to add money from their account to the smart identity cards and keep paying the amounts when and wherever required within the campus

The identity cards have been color coded to signify the students’ year. The first year students get purple and white cards, the second year students get blue and white cards, while the third year students get maroon and white cards. The ones holding positions in the college societies get tricolor bands on the cards.

Win-Win Situation

This step has brought various advantages to the college and students; therefore, it is a win-win situation for them. Going cashless is the best option considering the effects of demonetarization. Students have supported the decision and appreciate this practice of going cashless, as they would not have to travel carrying money anymore. Additionally, these are safer than debit/credit cards because the recharge amount is in their hands. Therefore, this practice has definitely brought in a positive change and hopefully all the other colleges in Delhi University can change the scenario completely.
