After Indian female athletes’ stellar performance at the Rio Olympics, it seems a bit surprising that a Delhi University college has decided to discontinue its Physical Education course.
Bhagini Nivedita College, located in West Delhi, has declared that it will scrap its physical education course from the list of courses offered by the college
Purbi Saikia, principal, said that physical education course was introduced in 2011 but was closed when a new curriculum was introduced under the FYUP (Four-Year Undergraduate Programme). .
The college authorities have requested students seeking admission in Physical education course, to opt for some other subject.
Saikia has insisted that the course cannot continue as the college now follows Choice Based Credit System.
Students who are currently enrolled in this programme have raised concerns over the decision.
An application prepared by teachers from other departments of the college has been sent to the principal, requesting her to continue with the course.
The application says that the Physical Education course should be allowed to run because it is popular among students and has been beneficial for students in the past.
Meanwhile, India’s female athletes – shuttler PV Sindhu, wrestler Sakshi Malik and gymnast Dipa Karmakar – shined this year at the Rio games where they captured the nation’s heart with their great performances.
