Ms. Nandita Narain, a Mathematics Professor at the St. Stephen’s College, won the Delhi University Teacher’s Association (DUTA) presidential elections for the second time. She was declared victorious by a meager margin of 225 votes beating Mr. Rajendra Mehta of the Department of Modern Indian Language and Literary Studies, Mr. Sanjay Kumar of Zakir Hussain Evening College and Mr. VS Negi of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Evening College who were competing for the same.
It was intervened that there was some discrepancy while the counting of votes and hence it was disrupted for a while by the National Democratic Teacher’s Front (NDTF), Academics for Action and Development (AAD) and Indian National Teacher’s Congress Alliance (AD-INTEC) alleging that the votes were calculated in their absence. The results of the elections may have been declared but this situation is far from over with an apparent set of negotiations taking place for another round of counting and threats by the AAD to go to court.
Ms. Nandita Narain is believed to be a critic of the implementation of the semester system and the four year undergraduate programme, and now also of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) that has been introduced this year.
The council will now choose the vice president, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer from among its members with nine votes required to win each post in the coming time. Some other office bearers were also declared this phase of elections.
DUTA is a teachers representative body of the teachers of Delhi University. The elections for its office bearers are conducted every two years.
