Drug Abuse Awareness Programme at Amity University

Dr. Rohit Sharma, Director (Delhi Zone) of the Narcotics Control Bureau visited Amity University on International Youth Day to highlight the medical, social and psychological impact of consumption of drugs. Delhi Zone Unit of Narcotics Control Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India organized the event in collaboration with Amity University, Noida.

In his speech, he focused on the persisting situation wherein youth are affected the most in schools and colleges due to the rising level of stress and peer pressure among them. He said that the addiction of hard core drugs like Opium, Heroine, Cocaine etc is very strong in comparison to alcohol and tobacco, and hence appealed to the students to resist the temptation.


 

He talked about the two kinds of drugs, namely:

• Depressants: Slow down breathing rate, heart rate, pulse rate and thus give a feeling of relaxation.
• Stimulants: Accelerate functions of body organs and thus making the consumer active and energetic.

Effects of the consumption of drugs lead to:

• Irreparable damage to lungs and heart
• Damage to liver and kidneys
• Sexual impotency and loss of libido in men

He reiterated the fact that if a person gets addicted to drug abuse, he/she may lose the most important years of their life when the focus should be on career progression. 


 

He also highlighted the legal aspect of consuming drugs as per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Subtrance Act, 1985. It is a non-bailable offence and can lead to imprisonment upto 20 years and fine upto Rs. 2 lakhs or even death penalty. Therefore, he appealed the students to say No to drugs.

“Drug Abuse is a part of the larger design of Narco- Terrorism, imitiated by the neighbouring country who cannot subdue us with military mights and therefore, is trying to pump in drugs to destroy the generations.”
