Around 25% of students in India are enrolled with distance learning courses. Distance education was earlier taken care by Distance Education Council until 2012 but now comes under UGC’s discretion. Students who could not afford or had lack of time due to work or personal issues complete their degree through these distance courses offered by various universities and institutions.
It was an easier alternative but as per a territorial jurisdiction in June 2013 the state universities and institutions (private/government) cannot offer courses outside its boundaries. But many institutions are still violating the norms.
However, some universities still claim that they can offer certain courses making it more unclear for students. UGC still has not taken any concrete steps against these institutions. Students are still enrolling as there is lack of proper information. Some universities are offering courses which are not validated by UGC at all.

2. Don’t get confused between state and central universities

State Universities and Central Universities are two separate entities. The ban on offering courses beyond its boundaries is applicable only on state universities and institutions.
3. Check the validity of an Institution
