Debate Competition at ICFAI University, Jharkhand

ICFAI University Jharkhand conducted Intra-University debate competition on February 19, 2015 on the topic "Should students take part in Social Media Networking Sites?"

 

19 students participated in the debate, 15 for the motion and 4 against the motion. 

 

Advantages listed by the students included Sharing of Knowledge, Photos, Videos on a range of topics, entertainment, job opportunities etc. Disadvantages include fake profiles, possibilities of cyber security, threats to privacy and security, due to sharing of personal details on websites. It was also pointed out that some students tend to waste a lot of time and get distracted from their studies, as they get addicted to such websites.

 

Vimal Kumar Basu got the first prize, while Abhinav Sinha and Rishi raj shared the second prize. Third prize went to Vikrant Kumar.

Addressing the students on the occasion, Prof O.R.S. Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that Social Networking , like any other technology tool has its benefits as well as harmful effects and hence should be used judiciously . He advised the students, particular girls, to be cautious in sharing personal details on Social Media Websites so as to avoid any possible misuse by others.
