The Civil Services Aptitude Test (preliminary) is a national level test for recruitment of candidates in civil services. The Union Public Civil Services (UPSC) conducts CSAT to select the most deserving candidates in Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Forest Services (IFS) and Indian Police Services (IPS). CSAT 2022 is set to be commenced from June 18, 2022. Candidates can apply online on the official website of UPSC until March 17, 2022.
To succeed in CSAT 2022, it is imperative to know the exam pattern and syllabus. The CSAT 2022 syllabus will help you understand the difficulty level of the paper and give you an idea of what kinds of questions are generally asked.
CSAT 2022 (prelims) Exam Pattern
Given below are a few important points regarding the CSAT 2022 exam pattern to help you become familiar with the examination:
- Duration of the paper is two hours.
- The exam paper will carry 400 marks i.e. 200 marks for each paper.
- The question paper will be multiple-choice objective type.
- It will consist of two papers: General Studies (GS) and Civil Services Test or General Ability.
- The question paper will be available in both Hindi and English.
- For every wrong answer, one-third of a mark will be deducted as a penalty.

Paper 1- An Indian language selected by the candidates
Paper 2- English
Papers to be counted for merit-
- Essay (Paper I)
- General Studies (Paper II-V)
- Optional Subjects (Paper VI-VII)
CSAT Exam (prelims) 2022 Syllabus
CSAT 2022 will consist of two papers:
- General Studies
- General Ability Test
CSAT 2022 General Studies (Paper 1)
CSAT 2022 General Studies will carry 200 marks consisting of 100 questions.
It will consist the following topics-
- Current events of national and international importance.
- Indian history
- Indian and world geography
- Indian politics and governance- constitution, Panchayati Raj, Political system, public policy, fundamental rights, etc.
- Economic and social development- inclusion, poverty, demographics, social sector initiatives, sustainable development, etc.
- General Science
- General issues on ecology, environment, bio-diversity, climate change, weather and others.
CSAT 2022 General Ability Test (Paper 2)
CSAT 2022 General Ability Test will carry 200 marks consisting of 80 questions.
It will consist of the following topics-
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision making and problem solving
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy and data interpretation
- English language comprehension skills
- Comprehensions (both Hindi and English)
