So, I saw the first cut off list and did not get myself admitted. People looked at me with wonder. Many declared me insane. Others praised my courage. In my not so happening life, this single decision can perhaps be counted amongst the most adventurous and daring stunts I have ever pulled off. It did give me my fifteen minutes of fame.
But then the second list came out and I rushed to get myself admitted. I was actually very confused whether to pursue English or journalism. I contacted possibly everyone I know for advice. I was leaning towards journalism. And I would have gone for it, had a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach not stopped me at the last instant. It was hesitation. Not a good sign, no.
The cutoff for English honors at LSR and Hindu-my top two choices, was 96.5%...exactly my percentage. This strange coincidence made me stop and reevaluate my decision. Maybe it was a sign..maybe this was an indication of what destiny has in store for me.
Laugh at me all you want for being irrational, but if it was you were in my place at that moment, you’d be sweating. It’s not as easy as it sounds-it’s a very tough choice.
My unscientific thoughts alone did not change my mind. It was when I saw the syllabus of both the courses that the needle tilted in favor of English. Critically analyzing Austen and Dickens for an exam sounded much more fun than ‘Role of Media in politics’.
My inherent love for reading won. English it is, at LSR.
