In what can rightly be deemed as a landmark decision in the history of senior secondary education, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made its mind to discontinue the age-old practice of exam paper revaluation. As per the buzz around the web, this system will be practised from the academic session starting from 2022.

However, the CBSE officials also assured that some system will surely be in place to address the genuine cases of anomalies in the paper evaluation. The decision was taken in the board’s governing body meeting held in June this year.

Earlier, re-evaluation was started for 10 subjects in 2014 and the percentage of students who applied to avail themselves this facility was almost negligible – ranging between 1.5 to 2 percent. Even out of these applicants, only .5 percent of the cases were found to be genuine.

As per the board official, CBSE already has a system for the compartmental exam, which gives students another chance to save a year. The re-evaluation, as the official says, is time-consuming and a cumbersome process. Hence, the board is firm about discontinuing the re-evaluation process.

The governing body of CBSE has given its nod to do away with the re-evaluation process. To ensure the implications of this decision are minimum, CBSE has formed two committees: one to examine the existing bylaws and another to look at the system of examination.      

Well, it seems that CBSE has taken the decision just to avoid the hassles of re-evaluation at its end. How about the genuine concerns of students who are at the risk of paying for the mistakes of teachers committed at the time of evaluation. Can CBSE ensure there will be no mistakes, anomalies and discrepancies in the paper checking process? We all would love to hear the answer in affirmation.
