College of the Week: Lady Irwin College, Delhi University

Lady Irwin College has been recognized for excellence in work related to Communication and Extension. The college is affiliated to Delhi university. College provide education in the field of Home Science and offer Bachelor degree, Master degree and Doctorate degree in Home Science.

Programmes: BSc (pass) home science; BSc (hons) home science; BEd (home science); BEd special education (MR); post graduate diploma in dietetics and public health nutrition; MSc in the following specialisations — food and nutrition, human development and childhood studies, fabric and apparel science, development communication and extension, resource management and design application; and PhD in all five specialisations of home science

Faculty: There are about 62 permanent and 30 ad hoc faculty members

IT quotient: The college has three computer resource centres with about 120 computers connected through WiFi, and another 100 computers in various departments. The three centres are equipped with facilities for the faculty, researchers and students. The centres also run basic computer courses. These include computer-aided designing for fashion textiles, interiors and landscaping, graphics and multimedia, web page designing and desktop publishing

Infrastructure: The college has a digital library with a specialised collection of books, journals, magazines and other reading material on home science and allied areas. There are more than 50,000 documents, 2200 research papers, and 7500 bound, back files of periodicals available. The college building has been renovated recently and has an air-conditioned reading-cum-conference room. There is also a hostel for 160 students. The campus houses 27 science laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment

Clubs and societies: The students’ association of the college engages in diverse activities encouraging them to participate in cultural, sports and academic events round the year. Apart from the annual festival, called Quintessence, the association holds a talent contest, student representatives’ elections, among other activities. One general body meeting is held per term to discuss issues pertaining to administration etc. The college has a National Service Scheme society, a debating society called Vani, a fashion society called Prophecy, a literary society called Eternal Phrases, a Mukhauta - the dramatics society, a music society called Dhwani, dance society called Nrityanjali, fine arts society called Tulika, a sports society and an eco club. The college also holds events under the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among Youth. The college also has an active alumni association. The college also conducts various seminars, conferences and workshops

The college was established in 1932 under the patronage of the then vicereine, Lady Dorothy Irwin. In the University of Delhi, Lady Irwin College has the distinction of being the first college to offer post graduate and doctoral programmes of study
