The Department of Commerce at the Delhi School of Economics in North, Delhi University fosters the development of budding business leaders and entrepreneurs.

“Life is really happening here. Every day, we are involved in some academic or extra-curricular activity that makes us feel closer to the world of business and related areas. It’s an enriching experience,” says Gaurav Gupta, a student doing a master’s in international business (MIB).

Being one of the best institutions for management education, the department is the top choice for many. It also holds the distinction of being alma mater to some of the most successful names in international business, finance, marketing, research, and HR such as Nitin Khanna, AVP, ABM AMRO Bank and Sunil Thakur, senior VP, Religare Capital Markets.

Programmes: The flagship programmes are the master’s in international business (MIB) and master’s in human resource and organisational development (MHROD). It also runs MCom, MPhil and PhD programmes.

Faculty: There are 12 permanent faculty members. The department also invites visiting faculty from premier institutions and corporates.

USP: “The department has simultaneously been running three academic courses along with two professional courses with great success and has been able to offer extremely high return-on-investment for the two professional courses in management- MIB and MHROD,” says Kavita Sharma, associate professor.

IT quotient: SPSS (originally, statistical package for the social sciences) software for marketing research analysis and MS Office are available to students for research and other academic activities.

Infrastructure: The Ratan Tata library, with approximately 183,000 books, 100 e-databases, 350 national and international journals, 80 national and international online journals, is a major resource centre. The seminar halls, WiFi-enabled campus make learning a great experience. The department also has PG hostels, a cricket ground, badminton courts, etc. Students can access all the resources of the University of Delhi (DU), including all playgrounds, other libraries and convention halls like the DU computer centre, Patel Chest auditorium and other facilities.

Clubs and societies: The department has a placement cell that looks after corporate relations. A team is responsible for involving alumni in decisions related to courses and other activities. The Industry Interaction and Student Activities Cell organises business conclaves, guest lectures and workshops on a weekly basis. A team has been put together to organise the annual business conclave, Erudition, the flagship event of MIB-MHROD.

The department also has Marcom, the marketing club, which bring out journals such as Brand-i. Apart from all of this, there are finance and media cells, a student development cell and an entrepreneurship cell.

Student speak: “It was a tough call to decide on a college to pursue management studies with an option of at least 10 big colleges. The dilemma ended with MIB. It has added value to my career,” says Sharique Anwar, MIB batch.
