First he tasted success as an engineer and then realized management was his true calling. Like thousands of MBA aspirants across the country, Chandresh Maithil took the Common Admission Test (CAT) with a focused and systematic approach and finally made it to the country’s best B-School IIM Ahmedabad.

Instead of opting for conventional jobs with corporates, he decided to become an entrepreneur. He started his own venture, Naani Ka Ghar, a personalized kindergarten with a focus on a curiosity-based kinesthetic curriculum that maximizes the learning potential of every child.

How Maithil Prepared for the CAT

Maithil’s preparation for CAT was spread over two years. In the first year, he worked on some broad skills as GMAT was also hid target along with CAT. These included above-average reading speed (300-500 words per minute) even while reading complex, abstract and unexplored content from an uninteresting domain; strong vocabulary and analytical writing; inculcating reading as a hobby; mastering grammar; logic, and rhetoric; lateral thinking/lateral problem solving; data visualization/interpretation and puzzle solving. Practicing online test taking which included building concentration, dealing with eye strain and body strain while sitting in front of and staring at a computer screen for two to five hours, was also on his agenda.

Tips for Exam Day

Before the test starts, concentrate, warm up by doing some mental calculations, brisk reading and take your seat, he suggests. During the test, read all the questions in the first five to seven minutes of starting the test. Classify sections and questions into easy, medium and tough and use the mark functionality to mark easy questions even when you are just reading the paper. “Select only the easiest difficulty level questions from your strongest, average and weakest section (in that order). Try to finish this iteration much before half time. Once you have made the right selection of questions, ensure high accuracy within time. Quantitative ability is mostly a test of lateral problem-solving skills rather than mathematics, so avoid solving questions methodically,” Maithil adds.
