The Supreme Court has cleared the decks for admissions to under graduate and post graduate medical and dental courses for 2013 in state government and private institutions as it lifted its stay on the declaration of the results of the entrance tests conducted by them.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir also permitted the Medical Council of India (MCI) to declare the results of the national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET) conducted by it.

The court had by its December 13, 2012 order had restrained the state governments, private institutions and the MCI from declaring the results of the tests conducted by them.

It said if the December 13, 2012 order is not modified, large number of students would be adversely affected and lose a year. The bench was hearing a batch of petitions questioning applicability of the MCI’s decision to conduct the first ever common entrance examination NEET for admission to both MBBS and post graduate courses in medicine as well as dental courses.

The bench had earlier directed to transfer all petitions pending in various courts to it by January 15, 2013. The National Board of Examinations (NBE) had held the NEET-PG for postgraduate medical and dental courses in December 2012. The standoff started with the MCI proposing a common entrance test for MBBS, dental and PG medical courses. Opposing this, private medical and dental colleges moved the Supreme Court.

The apex court had ordered the MCI to conduct NEET and also allowed all states and private colleges to conduct their entrance exams but not declare results till the court’s verdict is out.
