APJ Abdul Kalam to teach students of IIM Shillong

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam has agreed to join IIM Shillong, the youngest IIM in the country, as a visiting faculty member.

The announcement was made at the B-School on Wednesday by Keya Sengupta, director of the institute, reported a leading daily.

In the presence of the world-renowned scientist, Sengupta announced that Kalam has given his consent to "facilitate the students of IIM Shillong" as a visiting faculty on the subject of societal transformation with technology and its application.

Kalam was present at the institute for the inauguration of SUSCON, the third annual international sustainability conference of IIM Shillong.

According to a representative for the institute, a wave of excitement went through the assembled students when they were told that Dr. Kalam would be teaching them.

At the inauguration ceremony, Kalam spoke on PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas), a sustainable development system.

"India's core competencies mostly lie in the sectors of agriculture and food processing, education and healthcare, information and communication technology, reliable and quality electric power, surface transport private and governmental medical and engineering institutions in West Bengal.and infrastructure for all parts of the country and self-reliance in critical technologies. If these five areas progress in a coordinated way, it will lead to food, economic and national security and help in achieving energy independence," Dr. Kalam said.
