AICTE sponsored short term course at MITS, Gwalior

 

The aim of the course was to impart knowledge to the participants on the techniques of earthquake resistant design of structures. At the end of the course, the participants were expected to have fair understanding of various aspects of the design.

 

The practice of earthquake engineering in India has assumed new dimensions after the devastating earthquake of 26th January 2001 at Bhuj, Gujarat, India. Ignorance and apathy towards earthquake resistant design, blind adherence to often-unsafe age-old traditional construction practices and rampant disregard of codal provisions have been identified as some of the important factors responsible for the colossal loss of life and property during earthquakes. Education, training and research in earthquake engineering in the country is of paramount importance as more than 50% of its area lies in high risk seismic zones. Of utmost importance, therefore, is capacity building of our academicians and professionals for ensuring earthquake resilient design and construction. The proposed Short Term Course is a step in this direction.

 

The course provided introduction to Lessons learnt from past earthquakes; Damages to structures during earthquakes; Engineering seismology; Introduction to structural dynamics- SDOF and MDOF systems; Consideration for building planning; Earthquake resistant measures in masonry buildings; Design and ductile detailing of reinforced concrete buildings; Geotechnical aspects in earthquake resistant design; Seismic base isolation,  Seismic evaluation and damage detection in structures; Seismic retrofitting strategies; Earthquake resistant design provisions in various BIS codes; Software applications.

 

The faculty for the short term course were mostly from reputed education and research organizations.  Also the department has qualified faculty who are working in this field.
