The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has amended its regulations and permitted approved institutes to offer courses under other regulatory bodies, specifically government certified courses and skill development programmes.
This is a welcome change for various institutes who wish to increase the number of professional courses. Now, the promoters of the institutes can run courses of any other regulatory body only after taking prior permission from AICTE. Recently, engineering colleges and management colleges have seen a drop in the number of admissions as compared to the sanctioned seats. According to the AICTE authorities, these regulations will help in addressing the problems of vacant seats in colleges.
The new amendment will help in optimizing facilities and provide them with the opportunity to offer multi-disciplinary courses to the students. Offering new skill development courses will encourage students to take admission in these institutes as well as enhance their skills sets as a whole, promising them a great career.
This move will also help polytechnics to offer more vocational courses and short-term skill development courses to fill the gap observed by the industries.
According to the DTE records, Maharashtra has approximately 625 approved institutes offering degree courses with a total capacity of nearly 1.84 lakh. It also has 760 polytechnics with 1.88 lakh-sanctioned intakes. The latest AICTE amendment in regulations will be applicable to these institutes.
