The three off-campus colleges that declared a cut-off of 100% in computer science for a particular category of students saw dismal response on the first day of admissions on Tuesday.
The three colleges —Aatma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Acharya Narendra Dev College and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College — set 100% cut-off for an honours degree in computer science for students who have not studied science in class 12. The cut-offs for applicants who have studied science are lower.
The practice of setting unrealistic cut-offs for a particular category of applicants is actually a well thought out strategy to eliminate a particular group of applicants. Instead of saying that non-science students cannot take admission in computer science, the college set a cut-off of 100%.
This is not Delhi University’s first brush with 100%. In 2011, Shri Ram College of Commerce had declared a cut-off of 100% in B Com (honours) for applicants who had not studied a single commerce paper in class 12.

This had created a huge furore with then HRD minister Kapil Sibal slamming the college’s decision. The college had attracted three applicants with a perfect score, all from state boards.
On Tuesday, the three colleges barely managed to admit one or two students in the course.
“The cut-off we have declared for computer science is a range. Only those candidates who have not studied science will have to score 100% in best of four percentage to get admission,” said Asha Joshi, vice principal, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, which did not see a single admission in the course.
All three colleges are sure to reduce their cut-offs in the second list. Unrealistic cut-offs are seen in the first list because colleges don’t want to admit more students than sanctioned number of seats. Second and third lists are expected to be more realistic.
