The first of the IIT’s set up in India, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (WB) was formally inaugurated Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in 1951. Actually the history dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up to open the first Indian Institute of Technology. The institute was finally set up in Hijli Kharagpur on May 1950.
IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute established by the Government of India. The Parliament of India passed an act known as the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur), Act declaring this Institute as an Institute of national importance.
Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. Programme of the Institute in all disciplines of Engineering & Technology, Science, Architecture & Regional Planning, Humanities & Social Sciences and Law (Intellectual Property Rights, Corporate Law, and Environment Law).
Eligibility
Candidates aged 35 years or less having a Ph.D. Degree and willing to carry out advanced research in the fields of Engineering & Technology, Science, Architecture & Regional Planning, Humanities & Social Sciences and Law (Intellectual Property Rights, Corporate Law, and Environment Law)
Application Procedure
Applicants are required to apply online. Application fee is Rs. 500/- (Rs. 250/- for SC/ST). Women candidates are exempted from the payment of application fees.

To fill in the online application form, Students have to pay the application fee on priority. The payments can be made through Demand Draft only. Demand drafts of Rs. 500/- (Rs. 250 for SC/ST category) should be made in favour of "IIT Kharagpur" on any nationalized bank payable at Kharagpur.
