About the InstituteThe National Metallurgical Laboratory is the third in the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) family of 38 laboratories. The CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory is a premier establishment of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. CSIR-NML pursues research in diverse areas ranging from mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, alloy/materialsdesign and development, corrosion and surface engineering, computational materials science, structural integrity and remaining life assessment, life cycle assessment and cleaner and sustainable metals production.
About the Course
CSIR-NML carries out R&D for the areas of Mineral Processing: Agglomeration, Coal & Iron Ore, Petrography; Extractive Metallurgy: Hydro-Bio Metallurgy, PyroMetallurgy, Electrometallurgy, Process Modelling; Surface Engineering: Corrosion, Tribology, Surface Modification; Applied and Analytical Chemistry: Surface and Water Chemistry; Materials Engineering and Evaluation: Physical and Mechanical Metallurgy, Alloy Development, Advanced Materials and Processing, Microstructural Characterization, Plasticity and Mechanical Behavior, Metal forming and Joining, Non-destructive Evaluation, Materials Modeling; Energy & Environment: Waste Utilization, Metal Recycling, Life Cycle Assessment.

CSIR-NML is inviting applications from eligible candidates for admission into Ph.D. program under Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), New Delhi in Engineering Sciences, in the ensuing session commencing from Jan’ 2012
Eligibility
For PhD (Engineering): M.Tech in Metallurgical/Mineral/ /Chemical/Mechanical Engg (for Metal forming and Mechanical Metallurgy) or Materials Science: They must have GATE Score for M.Tech (within top 20 percentile); CGPA or CPI: more than 8.0; having consistently good academic record from wellknown universities/institutes.
For PhD (Science) : M.Sc Students having NET-JRF or Lecturership: M.Sc Students must have passed B.Sc with Phys, Chem and Math. (Net Lecturership Rank should be within top 20 percentile) having consistently good academic record from well-known universities/institutes.
For Fast Track PhD in Engineering : Fresh B.Tech or equivalent (GATE qualified with ranks within the top 10 percentile) having CPI of 9/10 in the area of Metallurgical/Mineral /Chemical/Mechanical Engg from well-known universities/institutes.
Note: Existing Research Fellows/Projects Assistants (working at CSIR Labs/Instts. for a minimum period of one year) who fulfill the eligibility criteria mentioned above are also eligible to apply.
Selection
Selection for admission to the Ph.D. Program shall be on the basis of interview of short listed candidates at CSIR-NML. The interview for selection will be conducted at CSIRNML, Jamshedpur.
