Admission Notification: Ph. D Courses in Indian Institute of Astrophysics

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is a premier institute devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and related physics. The main campus of the Institute is in Koramangala, Bangalore, whereas the Hosakote campus, near Bangalore houses the Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST). The main observing facilities of the Institute are located at Gauribidanur, Hanle, Kavalur and Kodaikanal. 

The Kodaikanal Observatory has for over a century been the principal centre of activity in observational solar and atmospheric physics. The Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur has been the main optical observatory of the Institute for night time astronomy since the late 1960s.The new high altitude Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) at Hanle in south-eastern Ladakh has augmented the facilities for night time astronomy. The Bangalore campus has an extensive library, a computer centre, physics laboratories and electronics, photonics and mechanical laboratories supporting an active instruments development programme.

Applications are invited for admission to the following programmes:

• Ph.D Programme (jointly with Pondicherry University)
• Integrated M.Sc-Ph.D Programme in Physics and Astrophysics in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
• Integrated M.Tech-Ph.D (Tech.) Programme in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with University of Calcutta (CU)

Eligibility Criteria

• B. Sc in Mathematics and Physics for Integrated Ph.D. courses OR B.E. / B.Tech
• MSc/Integrated MSc OR ME/M.Tech. Integrated ME/M.Tech OR M.Phil for Ph.D. Programmes
• For Integrated M-Tech- Ph.D:
• BE/B.Tech in Applied Physics/Engg Physics, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Photonics/Optics/Opto-electronics OR
• B.Tech. (Post BSc Hons.) in Optics and Optoelectronics, Radio Physics and Electronics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Electronics, Instrumentation

Candidates who obtained their last degree (qualifying degree) before 2008 are not eligible to apply.
