Download the App
Have a smart phone? Download Apps like Studious (it not only reminds you of important deadlines but automatically silences your phone during a lecture!); Schooltraq (an app that helps you to organise your assignments), Handy-calc (a convenient substitute for a scientific calculator) and Pearson Book Store (helps you prep up for all kinds of exams with online tests and tutoring). Pen drives are a must too. Be it collecting pdf or doc files for notes, or preparing for a presentation, USB drives can be of great help.
Turn on the Radio
Established at School of Open Learning in 2007, DUCR 90.4 is a community radio station. It broadcasts student-centric community-based programmes dealing with issues such as health, hygiene, anti smoking, gender sensitisation and environment. Phone-in to join programmes with experts on health, education, stress management, interpersonal relationships between parents and children and examination stress. Other features include spreading awareness among the students about various careers, career counselling, broadcasting programmes of colleges such as seminars, workshops, lectures, discussions, debates, and cultural functions. A must listen for a DU student
When on the go...
Start exploring commuting alternatives. The Metro is the most convenient followed by DTC buses. Instead of standing in long queues to buy a token, get yourself a Metro smart card or a bus pass.
Hangout Places
Apart from the regular coffee shops, college canteens, DU cafeteria, go find your own hangout area in the sparsely populated areas of Mehrauli. With numerous archeological sites and not too many people, it’s perfect to spend some time with nature there. Other places worth visiting include the Viceregal Lodge, Anthropology Department Museum, Botanical Garden, and Yamuna Biodiversity Park
Be a Good Samaritan
If you were not able to show your potential in school when it came to participation in activities etc, college is the time for you to compensate! Engage in communities, join clubs, participate, and devote time to socially useful and productive work. This way you will make friends. Join the society that interests you the most. You’ll leave behind an experience to be cherished forever. Don’t forget to read and contribute to DU Beat, the student-run paper. Bookmark the DU Facebook page and the DU website. Indulge in social work, join an NGO. It just adds up to your resume
Doing it the Right Way
The transition from school to college means that you will now have to mould yourself into a more mature and intelligent person. In college, you must maintain a planner and carefully list your to-dos, deadlines, class timings and other commitments for the day.
DU Slang
Before stepping into college, make sure you know the typical DU jargon. Here are a few pointers: KNags (Kamla Nagar), fuchcha (fresher), Deb Soc (debating society) and D School (Delhi School of Economics). Be aware of the popular fests of the university such as Tarang, Mecca and Crossroads. It is Stephanians, Hansarians and Hinduites... get that right too
Paisa Bachao
Save yourself an extra 10 bucks or so by carrying a bottle of water from your home. Be careful with your expenditure for you have to spend years in college. Save as much as you can from your pocket money.
Be Safe
Carry a pepper spray, and learn a few self-defence techniques. You really need a transformation of the mindset. Re-invent yourself.
