The Supreme Court mandated OC on MCI has approved the establishment of 34 private medical colleges. The Oversight Committee has also approved seven colleges each for private and government to increase the number of seats of Super Specialty Courses.
The government had issued notification as approved by the OC for the current session, but with certain conditions.
- Number of establishment of the new medical colleges- 34- private and 0 for the government colleges
- Increase of intake capacity- 7- private colleges, one for the government colleges
- Renewal of permission- 30- private colleges, 0 for the government colleges
Earlier this year, the committee had slammed the medical education regulator MCI for not conducting a fresh inspection of medical colleges.
Dissolving Medical Council of India?
The NITI Aayog suggested the creation of the National Medical Commission Bill (NMC Bill) that proposed to dissolve Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed NMC Bill suggests that the central government must establish autonomous boards for conducting undergraduate and postgraduate education, assessment and rating of medical institutions and registration of medical practitioners. This proposal has not gone well with hundreds of doctors across the country who terms it as an undemocratic move.
Does this step of dissolving the MCI solve the current issues in medical education? Introducing newer boards may not solve the core issue, which is functioning without glitches and be corruption free.
