The year 2014 witnessed a series of developments in every sphere, be it politics, education, sports, science or technology. Due to Bharatiya Janata Party’s massive victory in the general elections 2014, we saw Narendra Modi being sworn in as the Prime Minister of India. This has induced a ray of hope within the people of India to see good governance and a global economic boom. There are other developments we can be proud of, like our sportsmen making us proud in the 2014 Asian Games, Kailash Satyarthi winning the Nobel Peace Prize for child rights and so on.

5 new IITs & 5 more IIMs

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed the setting up of five new IITs in Jammu, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The five new IIMs will be set up in Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Maharashtra and Odisha.

 

 

 

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission)

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national level campaign by the Government of India, covering approximately 4041 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. The campaign is India's biggest ever cleanliness drive.

 

 

Make in India (Foreign Investment)

Make in India is an international marketing campaigning slogan coined by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi to attract businesses from around the world to invest and manufacture in India.

 

 

Highest-ever Voter Turnout

The 2014 Lok Sabha election earned the distinction of recording the highest voter turnout ever at 66.4%. This surpasses the 64% polling witnessed in the 1984 polls, held in extraordinary circumstances following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and makes the 58.2% turnout of 2009 pale in comparison.

 

 

Dismissal of FYUP (Four Year Undergraduate Programme)

Rolling back of FYUP was even more dramatic than its introduction. A series of protests led by students resulted in the dismissal of FYUP. The decision to roll back FYUP was welcomed by students who were not in favour of the programme.

 

 

SC Recognizes Transgenders as ‘Third Gender’

In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court created the ‘third gender’ status for transgenders. Earlier, they were forced to write male or female against their gender.

 

 

India Officially Declared a ‘Polio Free’ Nation

India was officially declared ‘Polio Free’ by the World Health Organization (WHO). India is one of the 11 countries in the South East Asian region which has been certified as being free of the sinister polio virus.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) named Sachin Tendulkar as the brand ambassador for the upcoming 2015 Cricket World Cup, to be jointly co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

 

 

India Shined at Asian Games 2014

After 16 years, India won the Gold medal in Asian Games men's hockey tournament, and consequently earned a direct berth to the 2022 Summer Olympics hockey tournament. In total India won 57 medals (11 gold, 10 silver, 36 bronze).

 

 

India’s Mangalyaan Entered Mars orbit in First Attempt

Creating history, ISRO's Mars orbiter Mangalyaan successfully entered the orbit of the red planet on 24th September, 2014. With this, India became the first nation in the world to have entered the Mars orbit in its maiden attempt.

 

 

Nobel Peace Prize for Kailash Satyarthi

Kailash Satyarthi, founder of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an NGO which saves children from slavery and forced labor, won the Nobel Peace Prize. Kailash has saved more than 88,000 children from 144 countries.

 

 

Indian Stock Market crossed Rs.100 lakh crore Market Capital

On November 28, 2014 Dalal Street in Mumbai erupted in jubilation and celebration as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) crossed Rs 100 lakh crore market capital mark, thereby signally a new era for Indian stocks and equities market.
