The Facebook timeline is flooded with the flashback videos of 2014. Pictures, statuses and events, Facebook fetches all your big events and compiling a list of exactly what you would to see, good moments! Was this year actually as warm and happy as being portrayed? Well, we have a timeline of stories that aren’t embroidered with the human expectations of a happy ending, we have a list heavy with words and burdened by the truth and honest encounters of people in the past 12 months. Good year? I don’t think so, it took away the most precious things away from us.
1. Justice
It was just the beginning of the year, my inbox was still flooded with the new year wishes, when the death of Sunanda Pushkar hit the headlines. The death took place right after her involvement in a twitter controversy. We are nearing her first death anniversary, but do we know what led to her loss? NO!
2. Hope
The hope that was seen in the eyes of the families of the 239 people who went missing with MH370. The flight that went missing and was never found!
3. Strength
They say time is the biggest healer, but were we given time to come out of one calamity before an encounter with another? The second blow to Malaysian airlines with MH17 being shot down was just heart- wrenching. The loss of the 298 innocent individuals was enough to destroy whatever strength we had to come out of such situations.
4. Joy
The demise of Robbin Williams in itself was a great loss. Yet, I do believe that deaths are a part of living. But, somehow, the death of Williams took away a lot more than it should have. On learning that the man who managed to make us smile every time he was reeled, actually committed a suicide, the joy of our lives was taken away.
5. Dignity
Ridiculing and disrespecting women is just another highlight of the society these days. Shweta Prasad’s controversy was yet another reason for us to be ashamed of the people we are surrounded by. Objectifying women! Is it ever going to come to a halt?
6. Emotions
The year kept passing by, unfolding a new chapter of pain and suffering. Jammu and Kashmir were hit by the worst floods in the past 60 years! The shelters and belongings of people suffered a huge blow. The floods washed away the emotions that were attached to all the things that were destroyed by it.
7. Thrill
The cheer of the crowd, and excitement for the match hit the dead end when Phillip Hughes was injured on the field. It started just as any other day. He entered the field with victory on his mind but left with an injury that led to the sudden loss of our ’63 not out’.
8. Our Voice
It was a head on collision with the orthodox mentality and ‘their’ idea of right and wrong. ‘Kiss of Love’, an expression of change and a voice against the judgemental outlook was bombarded by the so called ‘gatekeepers’ of our Indian culture. We live in a country where countless men get away with rape attempts on wives but kissing out of your own will leads to bloodshed. Ashamed!
9. Safety
Getting late? Don’t take the public transport book a cab! Well, not anymore. The Uber rape case wasn’t just an assault of one female, but it was a rape of the trust, the safety, the mind-set and most importantly our notions about the world at large. It is really that difficult to choose between your physical desires and a bleeding, helpless, lifeless, emotionally and physically shattered woman? Will our women ever be safe to step out any time without feeling scared?
11. Humanity
The last 10 days have made me go through a journey from being an optimist to a pessimist. Rapes and terrorist attacks, No! This is not how December should be. The Sydney Café attack was a disturbing piece of news all across the globe. It made us believe that we are anything but safe in a world full of sadist, heartless cowards who are nothing but a threat to mankind.
11. This was just it! It took away everything, childhood, dreams, compassion, hope, belief, trust most importantly it just destroyed human kind for me!
The kids were preparing themselves for winter vacations and what they encountered has left everyone in a state of shock. Targeting small school students, shooting them down with blood stains on the wall, how cold hearted can people be to pull this off? It is not just Delhi, not women, not India, the world as a whole has become unfit for survival. 16th December is indeed is a dark day. Two years ago it was Nirbhaya Rape Case and this year it is the Peshawar Attack on innocent small kids! Will it ever end? Will the coming year be any different?
