Aiming to improve the employability rate, minimum three internships will be made compulsory for the engineering undergraduates across the country. The colleges will be responsible for ensuring the internship.
In the year 2015-16, it has been noticed that 56% engineering graduates remained unemployed.

Prakash Javadekar, HRD Minister said “Every student in technical institute should undergo three internships each spanning four to eight weeks before completion of his/her under-graduation course. The responsibility will be on the institute to help students find a suitable industry for the internship.”
He added that according to the AICTE data, out of 15.87 lakh engineering students from 10,328 technical institutes, only 6.96 lakh were able to get jobs via campus placements in 2015-16. However, according to the minister, the number could have been increased if students have avoided opting for higher studies or start-ups.
Alongside, a mandatory refresher course will also be offered to faculty members annually. Teachers can take the course from government’s SWAYAM portal.

He further said, “Every teacher in each of the technical discipline shall mandatorily undergo an annual refresher course through SWAYAM portal (Massive open online course), encapsulating all advances in their field of study.”
Javadekar also said, “Therefore, it will be wrong to say that more than half of the engineers graduating from technical institutes across the country remain unemployed.”
It has been analyzed that this low-employability level is the outcome of less requisite skills. These internship programmes help students to build latest skills that companies are seeking in potential engineers.
